Why a 256MB "Old-School" Die Can Be Worth More Than a 64GB TLC Die
Consumer recyclers chase high-capacity TLC/QLC dies, while industrial SLC/MLC NAND sits in a systematically overlooked corner. SLC (single-level cell) stores 1 bit per cell with endurance typically above 100,000 P/E cycles — 20-30x the ~3,000-5,000 cycles of TLC; industrial equipment is engineered for 10-15 year service lives, and routers, ONTs, base station boards, utility meters and medical devices are exactly where these "long-life dies" live. The parts are small (typically 128MB-2GB), scattered across millions of devices and labor-intensive to harvest, so most recyclers sell them by weight — on a per-GB basis, SLC NAND prices at roughly 30-50x consumer TLC dies, and treating industrial parts as generic scrap gives the margin away for free.
Why Industrial-Grade NAND Is Worth Collecting Right Now
The recycling value of industrial NAND rests on three structural drivers:
- Huge installed base: routers, ONTs and networking gear ship in the hundreds of millions each year, with carrier and enterprise equipment retiring on 5-8 year cycles; base station boards, PLCs, electricity/water/gas meters, POS terminals and medical monitors retire by the tens of millions annually, each board carrying 1-8 SLC/MLC/SPI NAND dies
- Repair-spare demand that never goes away: industry operates on "repair, don't replace," making teardown SLC the steady spare-parts source for VFD, medical and metering repair markets
- Firm channel pricing: medical, defense and utility channels buy wide-temperature / high-reliability dies on standing programs of record, and traceable industrial lots carry permanent premiums independent of consumer NAND boom-bust swings
The industrial NAND problem is never "no demand" — it's "no sorting." Segregated by type and temperature grade, a batch sells 50%+ higher.
Industrial SLC/MLC NAND Recycling Price Reference
Current reference prices for mainstream industrial NAND dies (Reference Price (CNY) per die, Q3 2026):
| Die type | Representative dies | Reference Price (CNY) |
| 1Gbit (128MB) SLC | Samsung K9F1G08U0D/U0E, Micron MT29F1G08ABADA, Toshiba TC58NVG0S3 | 2-5 |
| 4Gbit (512MB) SLC | Samsung K9F4G08U0F, Micron MT29F4G08ABADA, Infineon S34ML04G104 | 8-18 |
| 8Gbit (1GB) SLC | Samsung K9F8G08U0M, Micron MT29F8G08ABABA | 15-35 |
| 16Gbit (2GB) SLC | Micron MT29F16G08ABABA | 30-60 |
| 1Gbit SPI NAND | Winbond W25N01GVZEIG | 1.5-3.5 |
| 8Gbit (1GB) MLC | Samsung K9GBG08U0A, Micron MT29F8G08ADADA | 10-22 |
Note: These are Q3 2026 reference ranges. Dies with crisp markings, wide-temperature ratings (-40°C and above) and traceable origin (from medical, defense or utility equipment) command the top of these ranges and often more; oxidized or relabeled parts price at the bottom.
Identification & Grading: Four Moves That Set the Unit Price
- Read the marking: Samsung K9F prefix means SLC, K9G/K9GB means MLC; Micron parts with "ABADA" suffix are typically SLC and "ADADA" MLC; Winbond W25N01G series are SPI NAND SLC — one letter of difference, several times the price
- Check the temperature grade: "I" suffix means industrial (-40 to +85°C), "E" extended (-40 to +105°C), automotive per AEC-Q100; store and quote wide-temperature parts separately at a premium
- Inspect package & condition: TSOP48 and BGA are the two mainstream packages; oxidized leads and polished markings mean relabeled parts and take a discount; BGA dies reuse the same reballing line as consumer TLC
- Keep origin records: which equipment class and which carrier or hospital the dies came from dictates channel pricing — a paper trail closes deals faster
Done right, an industrial-NAND batch sells 50%+ higher; selling SLC by weight throws the spare-parts budget of the entire industrial repair chain into the scrap bin.
Who Buys Teardown Industrial NAND?
- Industrial repair-spare traders: VFD, medical instrument and meter repair markets buy matching SLC dies on a standing basis, with clear premiums on discontinued models
- Metering & utility sector: electricity/water/gas meter makers and grid automation firms need stable replacement dies, wide-temperature first
- Embedded design houses: module and industrial board makers want low-cost SPI NAND (W25N01G series) and SLC sources — steady high-volume buyers
- Overseas industrial repair channels: the massive installed base of industrial equipment in Europe, the US and Japan creates explicit demand for teardown SLC NAND — keep export compliance and data erasure in order
Advice for Dismantlers and Recyclers
- Never sell industrial parts as scrap: a 1Gbit SLC die is worth CNY 2-5; by-weight pricing pays fractions of a yuan — sorting IS the margin
- Segregate by type and temperature grade: SLC/MLC/SPI NAND apart, and industrial/extended/automotive grades apart; mixing hands the spread away for free
- Verify markings and EOL status: discontinued models carry repair-channel premiums — check current demand before quoting
- Keep data security front and center: industrial devices hold metering data, keys and credentials; proactively offer NIST 800-88-style erasure/destruction — the key to closing enterprise deals
- Ship compliant: handle defense and classified-channel material per applicable regulations and keep channel licenses and shipment records
