1. The DDR5 Transition: Faster Than Expected
- Server side: DDR5 penetration in server DRAM shipments is expected to break 50% in 2024, with DDR5-5600 as the mainstream specification. The three major makers are prioritizing their 1b nm process capacity for HBM and DDR5, and DDR4 wafer starts keep shrinking.
- Consumer side: The retail price of a single 16GB DDR5 module has dropped from over CNY 400 in early 2023 to CNY 230–280 in mid-2024, narrowing the price gap with DDR4 to under 20%. Almost all new-build users now choose DDR5.
- OEM moves: Micron was the first to publish a DDR4 EOL timeline (last orders around 2025, last shipments around 2026). Samsung and SK Hynix are also continuously reducing DDR4 wafer starts, shifting capacity to the higher-margin HBM3E.
2. Recycling Market: Supply Surges, Prices Halved

3. Where Is the Value in Old Chips? Three Pillars of Demand
DDR4 prices have fallen, but they will not go to zero. Demand in the following three areas is rigid and forms the floor under recycling prices:
- Industrial control and networking equipment: Routers, switches, and industrial PCs have lifecycles of 5–10 years. Repairing installed equipment and building new production lines still rely overwhelmingly on DDR4, making long-term supply (LTS) demand rigid. This is the largest absorption channel for recycled DDR4 chips — LTS buyers typically pay 10%–20% above open-market prices, but require original-marked chips, same production batch, and no reballing/refurbishment.
- Automotive and security: Automotive T-BOX units, dash cams, and security NVR/DVR systems make heavy use of DDR4 and LPDDR4. Automotive certification cycles are long, so a switch to DDR5 is unlikely in the near term.
- Set-top boxes and white-label tablets: Platforms from Allwinner, Rockchip, and Amlogic support DDR4 and even DDR3. Cost-sensitive products prefer harvested chips, which run 30%–50% cheaper than brand-new parts.
4. Outlook and Actionable Advice
- Next 12–18 months: DDR4 recycling prices will drift slowly downward but will not collapse — industrial long-term supply is the price floor. After the OEMs fully stop DDR4 production in 2026, DDR4 will become "out-of-print LTS material," and prices may actually stabilize or even recover modestly — exactly what happened historically after DDR3 went EOL.
- Factories holding idle inventory: Sell DDR4 stock in batches as soon as possible — the longer you wait, the more it depreciates. Once capital is recovered, redeploying into DDR5-related materials offers better prospects.
- Recyclers: Building channels to industrial LTS buyers is the key. DDR4 chips bought at low prices can deliver 25%–35% gross margins when matched to LTS orders, far above the 8%–12% of pure trading.
- DDR5 chips: Recycling volumes are currently small and prices firm — a 16Gb DDR5 chip recycles at 2–3 times the price of an equivalent DDR4 chip. Moderate holding is reasonable.
